.LU follows the trend

The register of Luxembourg follows the trend and has announced that its extension will soon be available in IDN (internationalized domain names) as well. This means that it will be possible to register names such as cinéma.lu, école.lu or société.lu.
The sunrise period will start on February 1st and end on March 30th, 2010. During those two months, the holders of .LU domain names will be entitled to register their equivalent in IDN format.
The registration will be possible for everyone as of April 1st, 2010, and the first who applies will be the first served. The register of Luxembourg should very soon publish a list presenting all the allowed characters.
What will also change:
- The holders of .LU domain names living abroad won’t need an administrative contact in Luxembourg anymore, in order to register and manage their domain name.
- From January 1st, 2011 it will be possible to register cities or villages names for whoever applies for it and no matter the nationality or home country of the applicants. As a matter of fact, if local authorities want to protect their cities or villages names, they have until this date to secure those names.
- Lastly, all the domain names which were “locked” until now will be freed again within the year, and consequently, will be available again.
