.IQ : finally ready for registrations

After long negotiations with the ICANN about the opening of its national extension, the Iraq government finally got what he was waiting for and announces the set up of a .IQ.

The story of this extension starts back in 1997, when it was created. Because of many political conflicts, the ICANN quickly decided to entrust .IQ until 2004 to an American company, Infocom. And this is about 7 years later that Iraq is finally allowed to take back its extension…even though it still isn’t open for public.

What is different today: everybody is finally allowed to reserve and register a .IQ domain, but applicants will still have to wait until their domains can be activated and available online. To this day, no information has been given yet about the opening date of theses activations.

Still, we know that in terms of naming nomenclature, the Iraqi commission plans on specific extensions for each of the country entities:

- GOV.IQ will be for local government ministries and institutions
- COM.IQ for industrial and commercial companies, foundations and banks.
- EDU.IQ for educational and cultural institutions (university, high school etc.)
- MIL.IQ for the Ministry of Defense and the associated military foundations.
- ORG.IQ for local non-profit organizations, foundations, formations and parties.
- NET.IQ for Internet Access providers
- NAME.IQ for natural and legal entities
- NIZ.IQ for commercial companies
- and TV.IQ, for television providers

knowing that .IQ will be reserved for the president, his prime minister and the Iraq representative director.

Even though the registrations rules have been given for “strict”, no Sunrise time has been announced yet. One still hopes that the government of Iraq won’t take too long to give some more information about it …
