A new model for new extensions

The ICANN has suggested a new pre-registration model, allowing to officially declare one’s intention to apply for a new personalized Internet extension.
To guarantee that the applicants are serious and willing to invest in this, a deposit of 55 000 dollars will be requested. Also, for those who want to participate to the first round of applications, this procedure is compulsory.

This new model, called “Expression of Interests”, is there above all to obtain a better organization. Its main goal would indeed be to evaluate the number of wanted extensions, in order to anticipate the work that will be necessary to create them.
The ICANN should make this new procedure official after its next big meeting (February 2010), if by then the user’s reactions are mostly positive.
