.FR : changes are in the air!
|
On March 8th, 2010 the AFNIC made a major announcement through a press release: on March 2nd, Christian Estrosi, the French minister for Industry, assigned AFNIC as the Registry for .FR domain names. In fact, nothing really new here for AFNIC, since it was already in charge of the French extension and responsible for its technical and administrative purposes. Still, regarding their growing popularity, this « contract renewal » was extremely important for AFNIC.
Let’s look at this change. It brings up the subject of the new Naming charter, which has a probability to seriously increase the number of .FR holders. Currently, it is compulsory to be established in France in order to register a .FR domain name. But from March 16th, 2010 it won’t be the case anymore: by then, this new Charter will be effective and it will allow people with a French nationality, living in a foreign country, to register a .FR domain name.
But the ambitions of AFNIC are much bigger: in two years time, they hope to increase the number of .FR holders even more by also allowing all the structures and individuals, based anywhere in the European Union, to register a .FR domain name.
These new rules will definitely guarantee success and popularity for the French extension!
Last but not least: even though AFNIC’s appointment as Registry of .FR wasn’t such a big surprise. It is still interesting to underline the fact that about 190 national and international organizations and “important people” have been supporting this election.
