One million domain names for .BE
|
In the weekend of February 13th, Erwin Boekee has hit the history of Belgian domain names with his www.boekee.be, the millionth .BE registered domain name! DNS.BE, the Belgian registry, decided to celebrate this big event by offering this lucky user to pay his registration fees, and this, for 25 years! What a present!
By reaching the million, .BE can be proud of its own success. Especially because according to the statistics, with 10 millions residents in Belgium, the country has 1 registered domain name for 10 people. In other words: among ten Belgians, one has a .BE domain name…and that’s quite a lot! Even if 70% of the .BE holders live in the country, it is still interesting to see that 30% of them are from French-speaking countries. Indeed, a lot of the Swiss or Canadian companies only see big advantages in using a .BE domain name. It is a great opportunity for them to open up to the overseas markets, without all the troubles and additional costs that can be generated by a different language, for instance (translation, concept differences, adaptation to the new country etc.).
From a general point of view, and as Jo Van Gorp, the headmaster of the Belgian register reminds us, the .BE actual statement is excellent: "The positive trend we saw in 2009 is clearly continuing this year as well. In January of this year we registered more than 24,000 new .be domain names, which is noticeably more than in the same month in previous years. The 1 millionth domain name is the result of the excellent reputation the .be domain has built up over the years, the enthusiasm and dedication of our employees providing DNS.BE's high-quality and innovative services, and our registrars' strong campaigns”.
At least, one thing is for sure: .BE does not seem to suffer at all from the heavy economical crisis that the world is currently going through…
