While promoting the .FR through new advertisements, the AFNIC ( registry of the extension .FR) is proud to announce the registration of its 1,5 millionth .FR domain name.
It’s a group of artists named “Les secoués du vocal” who helped the French extension stepping forward. Because of their new website www.lessecouesduvocal.fr, the two founders Sebastien Saramago and Guillaume Fortigeau will be able to promote their own plays, but they will also offer lots of music and theater courses, as well as several artistic works in groups.
For the two of them, it was very natural to choose the extension .FR: “ It was obvious for us to go for the French extension for our website, since most of our audience is based in the county of Haute-Savoie. Moreover, our website is exclusively drafted in French.”
Since the .FR was launched in 1986, the French extension has come on a great deal. As a matter of fact, there were over 100 000 .FR in 2002, 300 000 more in 2006, and more than a million in 2008. The domain name .FR is probably so successful because of the simplicity of its registration laws, but also because of its low cost in comparison to other extensions. However, nothing is gained yet: even though the .FR arrives at the 7th place on a European level, and at the 13th one for the most popular extensions worldwide, it remains far from its two leading competitors! Indeed, the AFNIC will have to do a lot more if some day she really wants the .FR to compete with the .DE ( 13 millions of registrations) and the .CN ( 12,5 millions). A very good challenge to come.
