Belarus restricts access to foreign websites
|
A new Belorussian law which restricts access to foreign websites for citizens and residents of the former Soviet state has been published on December 21.
On January 6, the law will become effective and any transaction done in Belarus through the website of a foreign company will become illegal. Peter Roudik, who is at the origin of the law, asserts that « the company might be sued for violating national law » in such a case. Belorussian entrepreneurs won’t have any other choice than using national domain names to keep on selling their services online.
But this is not it. Indeed, this law also plans to censor any Internet café that would let his Internet users visiting websites hosted outside the country. « The Internet café has to identify, record and report such behaviors to the authorities », says Peter Roudik to the Global Legal Monitor. If they do not apply this rule, they could be fined or have their café shutdown.
Also individuals who would navigate on foreign websites from home could be fined as well.
