Sunrise period for Chinese IDN started

In the future, you will see .中国 as country code for China, besides the well known .CN. During the sunrise period applications from registered trademarks will get priority.

More and more countries decide to create a country domain in their own alphabet, besides the country code in the normal Latin script. Now it is China's turn: in the future you will not only be able to register a domain in the classic .CN ccTLD, but also in .中国 , the country code in Chinese script.

In fact two versions of the new ccTLD wil coexist: .中国 (China in simplified Chinese) and .中國(China in traditional Chinese). However registering a domain name under the traditional Chinese version will automatically lead to the identical name in the simplified version, and vice-versa.

During the so-called sunrise period, from September 16 to October 14 2012, trademarks will have priority for registering their domain name. According to CNNIC, the trademark must have been filed with the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce in China, or, and this is important for non-Chinese trademark holders, the trademark authorities of their own country.

Furthermore the sunrise period does not apply for trademarks in Chinese characters only, but also for those in normal Latin characters or numbers. Belgian trademark holders for example would be able to register their brand in the .中国 suffix. Of course they must submit the necessary evidence proving the validity of their trademark registration.

Later a second sunrise period will follow, from October 15 to 22, open for all existing holders of a 2nd or 3rd level ASCII domain name (.cn or .com.cn)

If your company has established its business in China, or would like to do so, registering your brand in the .中国 domain would give your brand a local touch which should improve your business.
