Domain name .EAC : Time for Africa

During the 3rd Est-Africain meeting that took place in Kampala from the 11th to the 13th last August, some African Internet experts have been joining forces to think of a better way to handle the domain names of their regions. Slogan/theme of their meeting: “strengthening East Africa's critical Internet resources. Thinking globally; Acting locally”. Geoffrey Kayonga, the Director of Kigali's Sanvei Institute of Technology, declares: “We are trying to see how best we can most probably create a taskforce that is going to ensure that we obtain the regional code called .EAC”.

So, by uniting their strategies, those experts also representatives of the 5 East-African community (EAC) are wishing to set up a common extension for their 5 countries, .EAC. Their motivations?
- Strengthening their regional extensions which are almost being ran over by the international market competition. We are here talking about .KE (Kenya), du .RW (Rwanda), du . BI (Burundi), du . UG (Ouganda), et du .RZ (Tanzania).
- Leading to a better definition and visibility of products from the East Africa region
- Developing the business and bringing it to a higher level. This will include a modernization of the trade market.

During an interview, Geoffrey Kayonga explains in a better way which goal his working group is trying to reach: "For example www.x.rw or www.x.ug will be adjusted to www.x.eac. "

So will unity be strength? The idea is at least not bad at all et could even reveal itself as very promising for a part of the world that is still very far away from the first rows of the most popular extensions. But one thing is clear for the 5 EAC countries: they are ready to defend this project during the 5th annual Internet Governance meeting, that will be held from September 14th to September 17th this year in Vilnius, Lithuania. So the verdict should come soon…
