The extension's revolution
|
In a few hours, the ICANN will launch its new top-level extensions program. Companies, trademarks or any other entities interested will be able to register a domain name directly under a gTLD with its own name, and in any language (XXX.POKER, XXX.CANON, XXX.UNICEF).
With this process, we are far from the few hours or few euros which are necessary to register a domain name. In this case, creating its own extension will cost 185.000 dollars and at least 25.000 of annual fees!
Even though this investment should strongly dissuade non-professionals or bad jokers, some are still worried about the extension's revolution. Indeed, around twenty institutions have already openly shown their fear to see their brand usurped. In order to avoid any fraud, many of them feel forced to send an application to the ICANN, which means that they will have to spend a lot of money.
But the ICANN wants to reassure everybody by asserting that each application will be considered with a "group of intellectual properties experts, which will also arbitrate disputes between applicants who would apply for the same trademark".
Anyway, applications can be submited to the ICANN between Januray 12 and April 12, 2012 after having filled the TLD Application System demand on the ICANN's website.
These new extensions should start being visible online at the end of the year or from the beginning of next year on.
