IDN means Internationalized Domain Names.
The IDN groups all the domain names containing an unspecified linguistic characteristic, such as accents, special ideograms or characters.
This concept was set up to avoid that companies, trademark holders and individuals have to translate their names into web-compatible characters to be able to deposit their domain name. The goal is that they can register their names with their own linguistic characteristics.
Although the registering of the IDN is already possible for certain extensions (for ex. .org and .com), only few navigators and email software support the accentuated or specific characters. Propositions are gradually made to facilitate navigation on these sites.
The IDN is a project that the registration authorities of .be and .fr hope to realize soon.
