This is how you choose the perfect domain name

Your customers should be able to easily remember your domain name. Follow these tips:

  • The shorter, the better
  • Do the radio test: can the listener type your domain name, without any misspellings, when he hears it in a radio ad?
  • To be on the safe side, you should also register alternative spellings
  • Play with the new domain extensions – there is plenty of choice
  • Also include important keywords in your domain name, such as bakerjackman.be. This will help you get a better Google ranking!

My domain name registration has expired. What happens next?

A domain name is registered for one year. Before the expiry date, you will receive a payment request for its renewal. If you want to renew your domain name, you can do so by paying the due amount within the stipulated period, and you will be able to rest easy for another year.

If you do not want to renew your domain name, you do not need to do anything special - you can simply ignore the renewal invoice. Do keep in mind, however, that the domain name will then be made available to others to register!

Transferring your domain name to Register in no time

If you already have a domain name registered, but wish to transfer your domain to Register, you can do so very easily - and you will also benefit from our free e-mail addresses and forwarding service.

Just follow these steps:

  • Get in touch with your current provider and make your domain available for transfer. You will then receive a transfer code.
  • Go to our website, fill in your domain name and click on “Check”. You will get an “Unavailable” alert. Click on “Transfer”.
  • Keep your transfer code at hand and follow the next steps.

Is the domain name unavailable? You can very easily buy it from its owner!

You have come up with the perfect domain name for your project. Unfortunately, it has already been registered by someone else. Do not worry, all is not lost! Try to purchase the domain name from its current owner.

Use the Whois lookup tool to find the contact details of the owner. Try to reach an agreement, possibly for a fee. Did you manage to agree on the transfer? Wonderful! The current owner must now ask his provider to make the domain available. He will then need to provide you with the transfer code he will receive. Now, follow the steps for Transferring a Domain Name.

What types of extensions are there?

A domain name consists of your chosen word (mycompany) and an extension (.be or .com), which is also called Top-Level Domain (TLD). Broadly speaking, there are 2 types of extensions:

  • Country code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs). These include .be, .nl, .fr, etc. (for Belgium, the Netherlands, France, etc.).
  • Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs). In this case, the extension consists of a generic word. In the past, these were limited to a handful (.com, .net, .org, .biz...). But today, the number of possibilities has tremendously increased with the launch of a new range of fun and interesting extensions.

It is ICANN that decided to allow these new extensions. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers controls and manages the databases in which domain names are linked to the IP addresses of servers in the global network.

The new domain extensions: so many options!

Until recently, it was almost impossible to register a short, powerful domain name at an affordable price. This was a major obstacle to the development of e-commerce, especially in emerging countries.

That is why about 800 new extensions were created. For professions or sectors (like .immo or .tech). Or for fun websites (like .fun, .guru or .app). An unprecedented choice of possibilities, some of which are also available in non-Western script.

View the full list of new domain extensions and allow yourself to be inspired! We can register virtually all new domain extensions.

What determines the price of a domain extension?

The price covers the registration of your domain for one year and varies per extension - it is the Registry, the organisation that manages a certain domain extension, which determines the wholesale price. There are expensive, exclusive extensions, which are reserved for certain professions. Their prices can sometimes be as high as thousands of euros. But fortunately, most extensions are quite affordable. Often, special offers are available for certain extensions, and there are good deals to be made!

However, always be aware of hidden costs. Some providers will offer domain names at bargain prices, but afterwards you will be charged for extra services such as activation, transfer, forwarding, additional e-mail addresses, and so on.

Also, do not confuse the costs of purchasing an unavailable domain name with the registration fee. The acquisition price is a one-off payment to the former owner. In the following years, you only have to pay the normal registration fee to your provider.

Why do providers charge different prices?

Some providers offer very cheap domain names. But watch out before you register somethingfishy.com! This low registration fee will often be a costly burden for you. Extra costs for services such as activation, transfer, mail forwarding and domain redirection are indeed commonplace. You can also forget about an efficient helpdesk, in your own language, where you can get quick expert advice.

Register is an ICANN-accredited registrar. With us, you can register your domain name in complete confidence, and you will also receive many free options, which other providers would charge you for: free e-mail addresses, free subdomains, free management of your settings via the Domain Manager... We also allow you to register new domain extensions in no time!
